I love this, my journal also has some ikigai diagrams! I’ve thought a lot about the intersections in the last years but never read any books about the concept, shame on me! I’ll do that as soon as possible.

A question: do you think one can find ikigai in a corporate setting or working in a big company? From the descriptions of how to reach it, I’ve always imagined that you eventually need to become an entrepreneur to create the income source that satisfies all 4 needs. But maybe I’m missing something about what ikigai can be.

Thank you so much Su! Great question and I think it depends on lots of factors, but for me it's a yes I definitely do think you can find it in a corporate setting. For me personally that looks like an organisation that matches my values, and/or selling goods/services that help others or working for a charity or government department where your key mission is to serve and help others. It also needs I think an ability to feel safe and valued and able to craft your role a little, to have trust and autonomy. I think there are lots of people who perhaps wouldn't enjoy being an entrepreneur as they love being in a team environment. I'm not yet sure where that will lead me next in my career, but I'm enjoying the process of thinking about it and researching methods!

What are you thinking Su, what are some of your intersections?

Thank you for a thoughtful answer, I definitely can see how it could work with the right organisation. I am working as a data analyst and am trying to find a place that does good for the world and/or focuses on a topic I love like mental health, peace or equality.

I used to think that research in psychology would be the best combination for me, but unfortunately it is a competitive and high-pressure environment which doesn't reflect my values. In the long run, I want to go back to school to be a therapist, which has been my dream for a while, but it is a big commitment, and I wonder if I could feel Ikigai without that. In the meanwhile I fill my life with things that I love doing, and meaningful interactions.
